May Fishing Sessions: 05/14 - Fishing for Cocktail Blues at the Absecon Bay (Atlantic City, NJ)

Blog Readers --

Here is my fishing report for May 14th:

--- May 14th, 2015 ---

Location: Absecon Bay (Next to Harrah's Casino, Atlantic City, NJ)
Time: 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Fishes caught:

-- 7 Bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix)
-- 2 Clearnose Skate (Raja eglanteria)
-- 2 Bergall (Tautogolabrus adspersus)
-- 1 Tautog (Tautoga onitis)

Video:

The video is about sixteen minutes long. The whole video pretty much portrays Bluefish fishing! At the end of it, there are a couple photos of the fishes that were caught at the Jetty, on the Absecon Bay Inlet. Don't forget to watch it in HD quality (1080p50)! Goal:

My friend Bryant R. contacted me for some fishing down in Atlantic City, NJ. Therefore, since the Bluefish were running great in the bay, the goal for the day was to hit the Absecon Bay right at the Harrah's Casino for some "Cocktail Blues" (2-3lbs Bluefish for human consumption).

Setup:

I used two fishing rods for this fishing session. The first setup was my traditional 9' Cortland Endurance noodle rod with a Shimany Symetre 4000FL and 12lbs Berkley Vanish Fluorocarbon line. The second setup was my heavy action Daiwa Samurai rod and reel combo with 20lbs Berkley Vanish Fluorocarbon line.

The only lure used in the video was a Zoom Fluke (different colors) on a 3/8 oz. jigheadLater on, for the jetty fishing portion of the day, I used a high-low rig with size #6 Eagle Claw hooks and salted clams.

Summary:

Really not much to say about this fishing session, folks! Everything was pretty simple. My friend Bryant R. and I arrived at the Harrah's Casino fishing platform around 11:00 a.m.. Over the course of 60 minutes, everyone there was catching Bluefish non-stop. All fish were between 2-3lbs, with a few exceptions of 4-5lbs. They were hitting the Zoom Flukes right after we cast them! Lots of fun.

After having our share of fun with the Bluefish, Bryant and I decided to go down to a jetty by the Absecon Bay inlet (a couple jetties up the T-Jetty). We baited our rods with homemade salted clams and cut Mackerel. We ended up landing a couple Clearnose Skate, and I ended up landing some Bergall and a Tautog as well. Of course the Tautog was safely released.

And folks, if you have never tried a Bluefish before, I would highly recommend it! I cooked it "Brazilian Style," as described in the video. It was delicious!

Photos:

Waiting for my friend Bryant R. to pick me up at City Hall. Had a little breakfast there too. Heh

First Bluefish of the day! Not a big fish, but perfect for human consumption. As a reminder: harvest selectively, folks! Let the big ones go and consume the in-between. Less heavy metals as well.

As you folks can see, they were whacking the Zoom Flukes!

A nice dinner right here.

A Clearnose Skate in defensive mode. This fella was caught on a piece of salted clam.

Possibly the smallest Bergall that I have ever caught in my life! Greedy fish.

I caught this nice Tautog from in-between the rocks of the jetty. Tautog fishing is certainly a lot of fun! Reminder: don't forget to release fish that are out of season.

Our Bluefish haul of the day.

Fried Bluefish, Brazilian style: cut it into steaks and marinate it with only salt. Fry with a little bit of oil. Fresh and delicious!

Best of luck to all of us,

Long Days and Pleasant Nights,

Sincerely,

Leo S.
